Barbarians at the Gate …

…over the wall, and busting up the joint.

The first incursion came in the form of DH, who also follows an academic calendar, turning in his grades and suddenly being all around the house, almost all of the time.  But then the local schools let out for summer, and the hobbits came home.  The Mind Palace is completely overrun.  Even my canine companion has retreated to a corner, nervously chewing on anything that doesn’t get her in trouble to chew.  I need an alt office, stat.

Update 1: Really, I am not exaggerating.  Mechanical equipment is being used to sand the floor in the room over the kitchen, which has the only open table space big (and clear) enough to manage my work today.  The noise is so loud that it’s drowning out the sound of my teeth grinding.

Update 2: Now the barbarians are mocking me.  DH walks through the kitchen once in a while singing this.

Worst Snow Day Ever

snowYesterday the government, due to threat of inclement weather (my nineteenth-century friends would have said “skeered at the snow”), shut down the joint.  Actually all of the joints, separating me from a gazillion documents I need to read.  On top of that, I am without my dog and there’s no yeast in the house, so normal snow-day activities were impossible.

And in the end, 4″ of fluffy snow fell prettily all over the District and my part of Maryland.  The sun shone and the sky was blue and it was a very pretty, if frustrating and boring, day.

Meet Scrumpy

DSC_0762My not-well-earned break from writing a lot of crummy words into a crummy chapter today was a Twitter break where I learned that today is National Dog Day.  Look: there is a website (with sponsors!), so this must be a real thing (never mind that it has an official founder, who describes herself as a “pet and family lifestyle expert”; excuse me while I go update my c.v. likewise).

Anyhoo, seems a reasonable opportunity to introduce my veritable dozens of readers to the “canine copilot” mentioned in the blog header.  Behold Scrumpy, who spends her days at my side when I am home writing.  She’s not a huge help when I am trying to figure out how to turn a phrase or identify just the right word that I used to know but has since slipped my mind, but she’s a great audience in never ever interrupting when I read out parts of drafts or as a companion to walk around during a writing break and she never ever says “that’s a bunch of crap” when I tell her my latest awesome idea.  And it’s helpful to have someone around to ostensibly talk to during the day; otherwise it’s just me and the dead architects who haunt me.
